With the new “Aging Splendidly” monthly luncheon seminar series that begins September 13th, Immanuel Lutheran Church begins a new senior ministry focused on exploring some of the deeper spiritual themes as well as other important issues arising in older life. It is meant to be an inter-generational program for residents of the St. Paul community.

Dave Nimmer, Professor Emeritus, St. Thomas University

New retirees are often surprised by the transition from active employment to the new phase of life known as retirement. In this forum, Dave Nimmer, former WCCO TV reporter, will offer a collection of short stories about “trying to live a rich and meaningful life when the old rules no longer apply.”  Nimmer admits that the new journey requires one to be humble and spiritual. And he emphasizes that he hasn’t got the perfect formula – only a few lessons learned along the way.

Vital and active young-old adults are transforming the process and meaning of growing old.  What are the implications? What is important to personal well-being and vital aging? How can we share our strengths to empower ourselves, each other, and our communities?  As social entrepreneur and founder of the Vital Aging Network (2001), Jan Hively has devoted the last six years to addressing these questions.

How does accumulation of life experience lead to elder wisdom?  What steps can we take to enhance our wisdom potential?  How can we draw on our wisdom to help create a better world?  These are a few of the questions that Connie Hickle, a retired counselor with the Saint Paul Public Schools, and Larry Hickle, a retired Presbyterian pastor, will address in this forum.

Leaving a Legacy

A survey among octogenarians asked: “If you could change anything about your life, what would it be?”   While many people were happy with their lives, there were three common answers to the question:  (1) “I would reflect more;”  (2) “I would risk more;” (3) “I would do something that would have lasting value.”  Wise stewards find creative ways to give a portion of their income and assets to ministries they value.  Pastor Andersen will discuss a variety of ways to express our values through charitable giving.

Aging Splendidly: an MD-Geriatrician’s Perspective

Medical problems and resulting health care needs are part of aging. Strategies to postpone and minimize medical problems and their impact will be discussed, as will strategies to deal with the strengths and weaknesses of the American healthcare system.  Time will be reserved for questions and comments.

The Aging of the Church: Lament or Celebration?

Many lament the aging of the Church, but might this be an opportunity to examine ways in which baby boomers might energize congregations and open up new possibilities for ministry?  As a Lutheran pastor since 1973 and Bishop since 1985, first in Milwaukee, now in Saint Paul, Bishop Rogness will bring insights to the phenomenon of “the aging of the church” that are sure to be both helpful and hopeful.

What constitutes age discrimination?  What do both state and federal law have to say about it?  Gary Gorman will discuss what age discrimination entails.  He will explain how to file a charge and what can be expected in terms of process and results.

Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing

Sergeant Pamela McCreary, Crime Victim Coordinator, St. Paul Police Department

This session will include a video, “Senior Safety” about safety/scams often targeting retired folks as well as discussion about ways to prevent yourself from being victimized by phone solicitors, repair persons, and other “smooth talkers.”  Sergeant McCreary will offer many common sense techniques with common sense solutions.
