From the Pastor…

A Change of Pace

The seasons offer a change of pace.  I interned in Southern California.  I recall coming into the office one morning in March when the secretary of the parish remarked:  isn’t this a beautiful spring morning?  To which I responded, yes, but how is this morning different than the last 250?  She went on to describe which kind of flowers were blooming, the new prominence of certain birds, even just the feel in the air.  As a newcomer I was not very sensitive to those nuances.

In this part of God’s creation seasons are obviously very discernable.  The changing seasons dictates different activities, different life style, different moods and themes.  Summer certainly suggests a different pace – warmer weather, children out of school, a primary season in which to vacation.  In Minnesota lakes and cabins are a big part of the culture.  Weekend trips to the cabin are routine.

Churches adapt to that changing cultural pattern.  Many churches cut back their services.  Like many, we resort (no pun intended) to one liturgy at 9 AM.  Some faces we probably will not see until next fall.

The question it raises is what happens to individual and families worship practices during that seasonal interlude?  Some will worship in the area of their cabin, or visit a church in the area they are vacationing.  Others will simply view it as all or a large part of the summer off.

Worship is a discipline.  As any discipline, its regularity is important.  Obviously God does not take a break from showering us with blessings.  Thankfulness is at the root of worship.  For these reasons we offer you an alternative.  We have decided to provide a mid-week worship service this summer.  Beginning June 16 we invite especially those who are elsewhere on Sundays to worship on Wednesdays.  It will be in the East Lounge, shorter and a change in style.

Summer Mid-week Worship

East Lounge – 6:00 PM

With

A Light Meal

This change of pace is not eliminating worship.  It is providing another alternative time and style where that is desired and needed due to summer schedules.  If you can and desire to offer musical skills, let us know.

New in our library…

The Bullhead Queen by Sue Leaf contains a series of meditations set within the framework of the church’s liturgical year.  These writings explore the moral aspect of humans to nature through experiences she has at her home on Pioneer Lake in east-central Minnesota.  What is our proper relationship to nature, and what are our responsibilities?  The author explores the Christian theology of her upbringing – that man should have dominion over creation -  and her scientific background in evolutionary biology – that man is but a highly adapted animal among a biological network.

A nominee for the Minnesota Book Awards, this book is a thoughtful, well-balanced reflection on the advances of our modern life that we would not want to live without, but also of the costs to the natural world of our lifestyle.

Our Giving for God’s Work

We at Immanuel have been doing well for the first five months of 2010 in terms of financial giving in support of God’s work in and through our congregation and through other groups and ministries that we help to support.  THANK YOU to all who have contributed not only financially but also of your time and talents.

Now comes the CHALLENGE.  During the summer many of us are gone for one or more weeks and for several weekends.  In the past there has been a “summer slump” in giving (of our time as well as our wealth).  Yet the work of God still goes on and still needs our support and participation.

We ask that you PRAY about your giving in light of your faith in Christ, as one of his followers – or disciples and then decide how you will be faithful over the summer months.

To help all of us, when we change the worship schedule for the summer, as of Sunday, May 30th, to have one service on Sundays at 9:00 a.m., we also will add a worship service on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m., beginning on June 16th.  We hope that this will help all of us to be faithful stewards of all that God continually gives us.

THANK YOU again for your faithful support of God’s work in and through our congregation.

In Christ’s service,

Your Stewardship Committee

Guests:  Russ Carlson, Parish Administrator

  1. Opening meditation by Pr. Pera, taken from Mark Chapter 10: Jesus as servant; “servant leadership”.  Discussed what it meant for us.  Pr. Pera focused on the idea of “inclusion v. exclusion” and suggested that we keep this in mind as we plan for the future.

  1. Approval of Meeting Agenda: m/s/c.

  1. Approval of February 16, 2010 minutes:  m/s/c with corrections as noted.

  1. Pastor’s Report:
    1. Suggested we communicate to congregation that all pastoral services continue during our transition period.
    2. Noted that Lenten series/services are proceeding quite well; good attendance at dinner and service this past Wednesday.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

    3. Need adult chaperones for confirmation summer camp at Bay Lake Camp – a week or so in June.
    4. Library continues to acquire material; vocational series is being videotaped, with tapes available in the Library.  Come visit!

  1. Members-at-Large:  no report

  1. Property – Ron Struss

Snelling Ave. median project will begin soon (not know exactly when construction will begin); suggested that ILC host a neighborhood meeting prior to construction to provide a forum for questions/answers, and an opportunity to meet the project manager.  Good outreach opportunity for the community.

  1. Worship and Music:

No member present, but June Husom reminded us that the sanctuary will be cleaned this Saturday, March 20, followed by brunch.

  1. LASA – no report.

  1. Membership and Evangelism – Kari Moeller:
    1. Thanks to the committees for assistance at our assigned Wednesday dinners; they have been well received.
    2. Saturday, March 21, inter-faith Seder Meal takes place.  Kimberly Ryan is organizing.
    3. Summer events are planned for each month:  June – puppet theater; July – VBS; August - National Night out.
    4. Progressive dinner on March 20.  Dessert will be held at the church.  Youth will provide babysitting services.
    5. Committee plans to assume more direct control of Sunday coffees.
    6. Considering institution of a “greeters” ministry:  have volunteers on hand at Sunday services to say HELLO and welcome to all who come, and advise visitors (and members) as to the day’s events.

  1. Executive Committee – Mark Thompson:

Asked again for each committee to review its current mandate in the Bylaws and email comments/suggestions to Executive Committee.  Mark will send a reminder email.

  1. Stewardship – June Husom:

    3. The Synod is hosting a Stewardship training event on April 10, 2010.

  1. Finance Report – Mike Tjaden:
    1. Re:  Organ Fund:  Undesignated Memorials and Bequest Fund balances (approximately $11,000.00 and $3,000.00, respectively) to be transferred to the Organ Fund to zero it out.  These monies represent the church’s match of funds to the individual giving challenge issued to raise funds in response to Allen Organ’s offer of sale late, last summer.  Suggestion made that Finance and W&M review these transactions to assure all concur with actions taken.
    2. Church Administrator believes that he could assume duties of bookkeeper.  Motion made to provide 30-day notice to bookkeeper; friendly amendment made to specify that it be made tomorrow; m/s/c.

  1. Treasurer’s Report – Paul Mattessich:

    4. Discussed how to read statements; will try to break down “Offering Income” into General and Building.
    5. A big thank-you to Kathy Brudevold for all her assistance on transitioning ILC to Quick Books.

  1. Capital Campaign Update:  Mark Thompson.  Reviewed the All Committee Night event for the Leadership Group (which includes Council and committee members, as well as members of Capital Campaign and Transition Task Forces).  We are ambassadors and can help the Campaign deliver and strengthen its theme of “opportunity”. Also, the Leadership Group will be asked to pledge early.  Finally, there will be an opportunity to discuss the campaign at the Progressive Dinner.

  1. Transition Task Force Update:  History event after worship on April 11 – promoting it as “A Day to Remember”.  Provide Peg Wangensteen with input to that history – if you have any stories to share, please do.  Bring any old pictures you might have.  Possibly interview long-time members; maybe even oral histories (videotape).  Interviews of different groups have begun.  Probably will also interview individuals along the way.  Gathering this information/insights will be used to create a profile for the call process.

  1. Next all Committee Night falls on Maundy Thursday.  Discussed alternative date and agreed on April 8.  We will meet at 6:15 for announcements.  From April 1 through June, we will meet downstairs (another group will be meeting in the Gathering Area/East Lounge).  Suggestion made that during the “announcement period” each committee review any upcoming BIG events it has planned.

  1. New Business:
    1. Add a note to Messenger – if meeting at the church, schedule through Russ to avoid conflicts with others.
    2. The Foundation has provided a grant for an announcement display/TV.

Respectfully Submitted,

Claire Taylor-Sherman

    1. Committee Reports to be reviewed by the committees to look at big picture, planning and improvement to the report.  Check on detail and contact Russ Carlson with issues.  Loren Danielson will meet with the committees at the next all-committee night.
    2. Balance sheet reviewed.  Income $40,683.61.  Expense 49,632.04.  Mortgage $5,010.23.  Total -$13,958.66.  Great improvement on the reports.  A couple of comments:  The council would like to see the year to date numbers as well to see how we are tracking and the capital campaign income clearly shown.
    3. Capital Campaign revenue seems to be missing from the Income/Expense Report and Russ will be investigating.

  1. Committee Structure:  Exec. Committee to meet just to review comments from committees then bring ideas/recommendations to Council.
    1. Stewardship membership:  Additional members needed.
    2. LASA:  Needs additional members.  Looking to re-define this important committee to add clarity to its mission.
    3. All committees to review their committee description in the By-Laws and make recommendations for changes as appropriate.  Look at things that the committee does that is not in the description or does not do that is in the description.

  1. Capital Campaign Update:
    1. Leadership pledges are at 50% participation (46 pledges) as of Tuesday $318,000 have been pledged.  Reminder phone calls will be made if necessary.
    2. The K-6 kids are donating to the campaign and have over 100% participation.  Which means that Deb Ahlquist had to dye her hair as promised.

  1. Transition Task Force Update:
    1. Very busy with lots of interviews with the very active members of the congregation.  Going to try to figure out who has not been in any of the groups interviewed and set up alternated group dates to get these people involved.
    2. Day of Remembrance was very good, very enthusiastic and active.  General renewed commitment to doing the process right.
    3. Demographics study to be done.
    4. All input to be analyzed by the end of the summer.
    5. Staffing structure will be very important.  This is all interrelated with finances and congregations needs and vision.  This is an important joint conversation and recommendations to be brought to the council and/or the Transition Team.

  1. Outside visibility idea:  Desire to increase visibility of the church on busy Snelling Avenue with liturgical seasonal color banners outside.  This is an interesting idea, concerns about location.  No group has taken ownership of this idea yet.  Discussion of groups and people who may be interested in being involved.  Pr. Pera to contact committees and individuals.

  1. Other Business
    1. Lutheran Night with the Twins baseball is August 18th at 7:10 pm.  Sold out except that there may be some tickets available through group sales.    Chase and Darlene to follow-up on this.
    2. RCCI lease reviewed/revised and re-newed.  Additional spaces and fee are included.  There may be an arts group that could be leasing the space for studio, rehearsal and recitals.  Look like getting the master calendar set up will be very important.
    3. Bookkeeper:  Last day was 4/6/10.  Russ is now doing the bookkeeper duties and it is going smoothly.

12.  Adjourn 8:55pm
