A COMMUNITY OF DIVERSITY

We are doing a lot of visioning these days – what it would be like if…  I am discovering that Immanuel has a lot of diversity surrounding intellectual, social, and theological issues within its membership.  Is this a plus or a minus?  Is it simply tolerated?  Could it be one of Immanuel’s hidden assets?

I often state that Lutheran theology is a theology for today, for this post-modern age, for the highly pluralistic time in which we live.  Lutheran theology rightly understood knows what its center core is.  It knows what it is to witness to.  It knows its foundation.  That core is expressed in the Augsburg Confession, Article VII, when it states that “it is sufficient for the unity of the church that the gospel be rightly proclaimed and the sacraments properly administered.”  Beyond that we can have a variety of perspectives and viewpoints.  Beyond that we can disagree and discuss.  Beyond that we are open to growth as we enter into dialogue with one another.  For that reason we are also a very ecumenical church body.

We live in a very polarized age.  People are indicating an unwillingness to run again for re-election because of the polarization.  This dynamic is not restricted to politics.  Churches disagree on certain issues and want to start anew.  Families know that there are certain subjects from which they must keep an antiseptic distance.  Social issues can come between friends.  The calling for civil discourse is left wanting.

Immanuel has a higher than average educated membership.  It sits across the street from a highly respected institution of higher education.  Thus it is also in the midst of an educational milieu that at least affirms the value of civil discourse and moral discernment.

What if Immanuel sought to be a place known for such intentional conversation?  What if it gave an environment for issues of today to be dissected?  What if Immanuel manifested the courage to tackle theological issues which lack clarity and consensus?  What if this was part of our outreach to the surrounding community?   Immanuel has the building, the location, the make up to dream about such exciting possibilities.

What if?  Something to think and talk about.

Children’s Annual Meeting Minutes

On Jan. 31, 2010, during our Sunday School Opening, the Elementary grade students held their Children’s Annual Meeting (on the same day as the church Annual Meeting).

Martha M. opened with a prayer.  She called the meeting to order with the gavel.  Notes were taken by Greta M.

Bram V. gave the treasurer’s report.  He reported that the Sunday School offering in 2009 paid $350 for a Tanzanian student named Faraya to go to school. This was the third year we supported this same student.  We gave $268.01 to Feed My Starving Children, which sends food relief to children throughout the world.  On Jan. 30, 18 children and adults from Immanuel packaged food at Feed My Starving Children.  They helped prepare 24,626 meals.  They delivered the check and learned that the offering money we collected will provide food for 1576 children to eat for one day.

Martha M. led a discussion of various organizations that are in need of our offering money in 2010, with the students making suggestions.  The discussion was heartfelt and it was noted that there is great need in the world and many organizations that can use our money to help those in need.  The students agreed that a great need right now is relief for the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti.

By a vote, we decided we will designate our offering money for 2009 to the following:

v                 The first $350 we collect will be given to continue the scholarship for Faraya, our Tanzanian student.

v                 The remaining money collected in 2010 will be given to ELCA Disaster Response, providing water, food, medical supplies, and shelter to those affected by disaster throughout the world.

v                 We also plan to give our service by going to package food again at Feed My Starving Children.

We closed singing “Go Now in Peace” and Martha M. adjourned the meeting.

Faithfully submitted, Deb Ahlquist (from Greta M.’s notes)

Help our VBS go green.

For our Baobab Blast VBS, we will be collecting used and borrowed items from the congregation to use for decorations, crafts and science experiments.  Look here each month for a listing of things we will need.  Place them in the green recycling box near the VBS bulletin board in the lower level hallway.

Items we are collecting at this time:

·       Empty oatmeal and coffee containers

·       Green scraps of paper, it is okay if it has printing on it.

·       *Baskets, African print fabrics, grasses

·       Watch here for more items to collect

*Items that are to be returned should have a name and phone number pinned to them.

Plans are being made for Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2010.  Here is what we know so far:

Baobab Blast will be the gathering of the summer!  We will focus on community, taking our call to come together from our theme verse, “From east to west, the powerful Lord God has been calling together everyone on earth.”  Psalm 50:1

The great baobab tree in the expansive African savannah is the setting for VBS 2010.  This exciting get-together has something for everyone.  It will be loaded with amazing Bible stories, awesome music, energy-packed games, science, and creative crafts.

IN IMMANUEL’S LIBRARY

Young @ Heart – Get ready to rock out with the most entertaining “golden oldies” you will ever meet, a fun-loving senior citizen’s choir whose rehearsals are often hilariously chaotic and whose triumphant performances will leave you cheering.  Immensely moving!

Sweet Land – A young German mail-order bride arrives in

Minnesota to marry a young Norwegian immigrant farmer, but in post WWI, they find much community disapproval and suspicion.

Akeelah and the Bee – Akeelah Anderson’s love for words

leads her to enter a number of spelling contests.  Tutored by many and opposed by some, Akeelah unwittingly unites a neighborhood in her daring quest to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The Pursuit of Happyness – Based on a true story of a San Francisco salesman who’s struggling to make ends meet while caring for his five-year-old son.  An unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program offers a chance at a better life, but without a salary, Chris and his son are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters, and metro station bathrooms.  With incredible perseverance and the love and trust of his son, Chris Gardner rises above the obstacles to become a Wall Street Legend.

An Inconvenient Truth – This documentary presents an eye-opening and compelling view of the future of our planet.  It cuts through the myths and misconceptions to deliver the message that global warming is a real and present danger.
