Pastor and Staff

Pastor Cynthia Bullock

Pastor Cindy is eager to enter the stories that make up Immanuel.  She grew up in Baltimore Maryland, and received a BS in computer science at William and Mary in 1981.  While in graduate school, she realized that the nagging voice in her head was God’s call, and left for Southern Seminary, in Columbia, SC.  She received her MDiv from LTSS, and has since served congregations in Richmond, VA; Dallas, TX; and West St Paul, MN.

When she’s not at church, you can usually find her in her kitchen experimenting with new bread recipes, at her  sewing/embroidery machine, or on a sailboat on Lake Superior with her husband, Brian, and children, Kim and Matt.

When she is at church, she hopes you’ll come by or call.  She has a passion for faith in daily living: discovering ways to live out God’s call in the home, workplace and community.  Let her know how you see and serve Jesus during your week!

Deb Ahlquist, Director of Christian Education

Deb enjoys working with all ages and types of learners in their faith development at Immanuel. She coordinates educational ministries for birth to 3 years old, preschool and elementary Sunday School, summer Vacation Bible School, junior high confirmation and Sunday School, senior high Sunday School, and Adult Forum. She is amazed by the energy, insight, and drive to grow in understanding by both the students and the volunteers. Deb is originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, and has a B.A. from St. Olaf College. She volunteers at her daughters’ schools, plays in the Immanuel Jubilate Ringers, and also works part-time at the Minnesota Children’s Museum.  Deb, her husband, and three daughters live in St. Paul.

Russ Carlson, Parish Administrator

Russ joined the Immanuel staff in June 2004, having previously worked for Qwest, Intermediate School District 287, and the South St. Paul school district. The church began its major renovation shortly after he arrived, and he is happy to share stories about the changes during those first couple of years. For Russ, the best part of being at Immanuel is the interaction with the parishioners.

With a calling to be a musician, Russ earned a B.A. in Music Education at Augsburg College and keeps music as an avocation. He has served as a church musician for 40 years. Presently, he is the Minister of Music at Hope Lutheran Church on Cedar Avenue South at the Crosstown in Minneapolis.  Russ was a charter member of the Exultate Chamber Chorus and is a featured soloist on a number of its recordings.

Katy Brukardt, Volunteer Youth Events Coordinator

Katy Brukardt was born in Racine, Wisconsin, grew up in Spokane, Washington, and earned a Bachelor’s from Macalester College in Art and English. She is currently studying to become a teacher through Hamline University’s Masters in Teaching program. For over five summers, Katy has worked at an international camp in Switzerland teaching English classes and leading games and activities for children of all ages.

The joy of a welcoming Lutheran faith community and the inspiration of children has enticed her for many years to teach Sunday school at the kindergarten, middle school and high school levels. As the Volunteer Youth Events Coordinator at Immanuel, Katy is excited to have the opportunity to spend time with the youth of Immanuel to grow closer in community and faith through conversation, activities, service, and fellowship.
